Your wedding day is one of the most special, eagerly awaited days in your life; and often we spend a great deal of time and money to ensure that it is perfect in every way. Everything from the flowers to the food is given careful consideration in an effort to plan a cohesive and exciting event that is reflective of your personality. And nothing is more scrutinized than the photography that which will be a lasting memory of your special day. Todays sophisticated brides and grooms are looking to artistic wedding photography more and more as a way to infuse their wedding with non-traditional style.

Artistic wedding photography is photography that is approached with more than just stand and pose pictures in mind. Gone is the day of formal and often stiff wedding photography. Todays photographers have ushered in a growing trend wherein they bring creative expression to the age-old craft of wedding photography.

Some methods included in artistic wedding photography may include the use of non-traditional angles that you may have never associated with wedding photographs including the use of light, color, shadow, and scale. A creative photographer can create dramatic works of art out of a single photograph and present you with a photographic result you can frame and hang in any room.

An increasingly popular style of artistic wedding photography is that of candid or journalistic type photography. Using this method, the photographer takes photographs of the couple and their guests when they are unaware of the picture being taken. Photographers who are adept at this have an uncanny ability to stay unnoticed and still get beautiful, engaging shots.

Artistic wedding photography may also include the use of the computer to add design elements to the photography in order to make them unique. The choices are really endless when it comes to creating photographic works of art. Working with a photographer who can best express the style that is unique to you and your wedding means finding one that works at a higher creative level than traditional wedding photographers. Luckily, most photographers host their own website where visitors can browse through their work and get a sense of their style.

Having a wedding does not mean that you are stuck with traditional vendors and formality reminiscent of your mothers wedding. Infuse your wedding with modern sophistication by choosing artistic wedding photography. The memories will last you a lifetime.

Corfe Castle is located on the southern coast of England. Constructed by the Normans in the 10th century, it finally fell to the forces of Oliver Cromwell in the 1600s.

The castle ruins are, of themselves, an imposing structure. It would be difficult to take a shot of them that didnt work and, of course, they have been photographed ad infinitum.

I was on assignment for PHOTOgraphic Magazine back in the early 1990s to photograph and write about English Castles and Cathedrals. Corfe, for obvious reasons, was one of my premier picks. But how was I to do it justice? It was mid-afternoon. The sun was starting to sink, so the light wasnt too bad.

I shot the ruins from several angles and got some good shots. I was just about to wrap things up when I noticed some dark clouds moving in from the east. The sun was still shining but the sky was darkening quickly. I rushed frantically around the village looking for just the right spot. I found it just to the south of two public houses with a fine view of the ruins on the hilltop actually, its called a motte.

I barely had time to set up when the clouds moved it. I managed only three frames before the sun was gone. Five minutes later, the rains came and I got soaked.

My point is simply this: the image absolutely screams impending storm. You can see it at www.blairhoward.com/gallery2.html The sunlight on the buildings and the dark clouds create a mood that no human could possibly duplicate.

In this instance its the lighting, not the subject, that stirs the viewers emotions.

Now take a look at this second image: also at www.blairhoward.com/gallery2.html

This one came with only seconds to spare. I was out looking for outhouses. Yes, I have a thing about old American facilities. The outhouse is one of our countrys disappearing historical oddities.

Anyway, many years ago, Id photographed a rather unique double-seater. It was in disrepair then but, having just converted to digital format, I wanted to locate it again and get some new images.

I never did find that outhouse; a subdivision had been built on the spot where it had once stood (the lesson here is get it when you can). So, there I was, wandering the river bank and I came across the scene you see here.

It was early morning, just after 7am, and there was this bridge and the little boy, all alone, fishing. His folks were in a camper nearby. The mist on the river was enhanced by the early morning sun shining from the east. The light was changing rapidly. I had just time no more than five minutes to grab a few frames. I wasnt sure if Id gotten what I thought I might have, but when I loaded the images into the computer, there it was.

Does it create a mood? You bet it does: peace and tranquility, the joys of childhood, the quiet solitude of the early morning river bank and I would imagine you can think of even more.

Shots like these are not planned. They have to be taken when they are presented, and you have to think and act quickly.

Mood lighting often lasts only for a moment or so, sometimes only seconds. These are the shots that make the difference. These are the shots that will sell over and over again, because they tell a story, create a mood, and because they are one-of-a-kind.

Most often conditions like these will take you by surprise: youd better be ready for them. Sometime, you can anticipate such conditions.

For instance: we all know that in the early mornings, especially in fall and spring, the mountain tops and the valley are shrouded in mist. So, get up early, grab your equipment and head out. As the legendry, though anonymous, prospector of old would have said: Thars gold in them thar hills.

So, how can you make light work for you? Well, first you have to learn how to analyze the light around you and then adjust your technique accordingly.

    Four Key Elements

There are actually four elements of light that concern us as photographers: quality, direction, intensity and color.

Quality of Light, then, is the subject of the rest of this article. Ill talk about the other three elements in other articles.

Light, and Im talking mostly about natural light here, comes in two forms: hard and soft. Thats a very simple way of putting it, but its true. Let me explain:

Hard light is direct light. That means it comes directly from the source: the sun, a lamp, or a flash unit. Its hard because it comes from a relatively small source. Hard light makes for very hard shadows.

The further away from the subject the source is, the harder the light will become. The sun, for instance is, in fact, an extremely small point of very bright light a long way away and, in its unfiltered form, it casts very harsh shadows. The same goes for a single lamp: one lamp pointed in any direction will cast very hard, harsh shadows. A flashlight, for example, casts a very tight, directional beam of light from a very small source and thus creates very hard shadows. Weve all seen the harsh shadows cast by such a flashlight in a darkened room.

Your cameras flash unit in or off-camera acts in much the same way. It too is a relatively small, directional light source and, unless its filtered, casts very harsh shadows. Weve all seen those shots made by friends and family those heavy black shadows on the wall behind the subject are a dead giveaway that a directional flash was used.

The point is: hard light makes good photography difficult.

Soft light is also directional, but theres a big difference. It too is directional, but its almost always filtered in one way or another and thus is diffused.

In some cases it too will cast a shadow, but the shadow will be less defined, soft and unobtrusive. Soft light is what you get on an overcast day when the suns light is diffused by the clouds. Thus it offers a wonderful soft, overall illumination that renders the subject in a much more favorable light sorry, no pun intended.

Its for this reason that professional portrait photographers never use their flash units as a direct source of light. They either bounce it off the ceiling, out of an umbrella, or through a softbox a large box fitted around the flash head with a large diffusing screen to the front through which the light is filtered.

They want their light to be soft and diffused. And you can do the same thing. You can buy a small diffuser that fits over the flash head, or you can do things really quickly and cheaply by simply taping a tissue over it. This will diffuse the light sufficiently to soften it and the shadows it creates.

Now I need to back up for a minute because, at first glance one would think that only soft, diffused light will work for us photographers, but thats not really true.

Each of the two forms of light has its place in good photography. The creative use of hard light can make for dramatic images full of impact and life, while the creative use of soft light can generate images full of mystery and imagination, of atmosphere and sentiment.

In good photography theres a place for both forms of light. Its up to us, as photographers, to assess the situation and apply our knowledge and expertise to make whatever type of light we have available work for us rather than against us.

In Creative Use of Light Part 2 well look at ways to use the Direction of Light to create stunning photographs.

Canon PSC-1000 Deluxe Pink Leather Case for the Canon SD1000 and SD770IS Digital Cameras

This specially designed soft leather carrying case provides stylish protection of your PowerShot camera while on the go or for storage. This case carries the camera, battery pack, Compact Flash card and wireless controller.
Customer Review: Canon SD1000 Camera Case
Very sturdy and protective case for the Canon SD1000 camera. Has magnetic latch so it is easy to get the camera out when needed for a quick shot. Only complaint is that the camera strap gets stuck in the cut-out in the top of the case. The slot just needs to be a little larger. Otherwise, nice case for the money.
Customer Review: Almost too big to fit in a pocket.
I bought this product to use with the Canon Powershot SD1100 camera. It fits perfectly, as it is the same size as the preceding model (SD1000). My only complaint is that the camera is a little less portable inside the case -- you might not be able to get it into a pants pocket, if your pockets are small, whereas without the case, it is a great side to slide into any size pocket. Aside from that, it is a good product.

Q:I wanted to know, can Lithium Ion batterys such be overcharged?

A:Normally Lithium Ion batteries will not be overcharged if you use the correct charger and follow the manufacturers recommendation.

Most systems have monitoring circuits to prevent overcharging and overheating. The Sony "InfoLithium" batteries and some of the Canon batteries have the circuitry necessary to monitor the battery as part of the battery.

It it not normally NOT a good idea to discharge Lithium Ion batteries. Just charge them as the manufacturer recommends.

Q:I understand that I can leave it on the charger, but what about partially charging it?Like if I were to charge a battery that still has power in it ex. 5 hour battery capacity, only 2 hours used, will the battery or camera know when to shut off charging to prevent *possible overcharging?

A:Yes, the battery/charger will know when to stop the charging. The Power/Charge lamp will blink when charging starts and when it has has completed the charge the Power/Charge lamp will go out. The charging time will depend on the current state of charge.

Q:How is this harmfull? In the past it was always ideal to fully discharge a battery before recharging, so I assumed with Lithium Ion you have the option to charge without fully discharging but I din't think that was preferable.

A:It has never been ideal "to fully discharge a battery" before recharging. If you are thinking of Ni-Cads, that is not true. The discharged state of a Ni-Cad is normally about 1.0 volts per cell. At that voltage level, most of the energy is spent. Discharging the battery further could damage it through cell reversal. That is why Ni-Cad cells are always connect in series and not in parallel (If engineered properly)

The same basically applies to Li-ion, Li-polymer, NiMH and Sealed Lead Acid batteries except that the minimum cell voltages may be different.

If your equipment properly monitors cell voltage and possibly cell temperature and disconnects at the appropriate level like many Li-ion, Li-polymer do, then there is no problem. They may say the battery pack is fully discharged, but it still contains energy and that energy can be easily measured.

Normally there is no benefit to discharge a Li-ion battery unless you are testing it to determine actually capacity, to predict death date when comparing to previous tests of the cell, or possibly discharging to approximately 50% capacity for long term storage. I don't think the average consumer wants to buy the appropriate test equipment and maintain battery performance logs on their batteries.

Thus my recommendation, buy one spare battery, charge as outlined in your manual, and go have fun with your batteries.

I bought two equivalent batteries, as backups and they worked well... for a short while, after a few months of usage I could not get more than 20 pictures out of a battery even without using flash. What a waste of money, but mostly time and pictures They don't hold the charge for a long time and don't last. My original canon 2 years old now still works flawlessly

For the average family, a digital camera has become an essential item to record special moments throughout their lives together. Photography has drastically changed over the last few decades, and many of us who still remember the days of traditional film cameras that had to have pictures developed at the local pharmacy might be amazed by how quickly digital cameras took the stage.

And there's a reason why: compared to traditional photography, digital photographs are easier to print out, sometimes off much higher resolution and photo quality, and can store more pictures than their traditional film camera ancestors could.

Still, there are many photographers, both amateur and professional, who haven't abandoned traditional film photography or old-fashioned cameras. For them, the simplicity of the cameras and the photos, and the greater care it takes to develop the pictures, makes the process more therapeutic and artful. Particularly for photographers who still use their own darkrooms to develop their photos, traditional film cameras are a hobby that they would never give up for the relative ease of digital cameras.

Regardless of how much technology advances, there will always be people who still appreciate the simplicity of yesterday's methods.

Using a traditional film camera, especially varieties that are many decades old, requires much more patience, diligence and care, especially when developing your own pictures. And for many photo enthusiasts who learned their craft with older equipment, the comfort of a familiar camera and the process of developing the film themselves can be therapeutic. Just as many people who own a dishwasher still wash dishes by hand because they find it relaxing or meditative, developing your own photos can be a very unique and calming experience.

And the fact that not just anyone can do it, and that it is a skill that must be developed with practice, makes it that much more rewarding.

Interestingly enough, there are still lots of families who go to amusement parks and pay to have their photos taken in an "old-fashioned" manner, with grainy black-and-white prints for novelty and fun. They even sometimes go so far as to dress in clothes from the nineteenth century to make it look more authentic. Ironically, though, most of these novelty old-fashioned photos are taken with modern digital cameras, then altered to appear authentically antiquated.

Understanding why some families find it fun to get their pictures taken in an old-fashioned manner can help you understand why some enthusiasts love collecting antique photo equipment and using the genuine, original camera to take their own old-fashioned pictures. Photography was one of the greatest innovations in human history, and being able to own a piece of that history is an important hobby for many antique collectors and photographers.

So the next time you think that digital cameras have made old-fashioned film photography obsolete and unnecessary, consider the many hobbyists and photographers who still take great pleasure in using and collecting traditional equipment. And if you're an aspiring photographer yourself, you might want to try ditching the digital camera for a few weeks and have an old pro teach you a thing or two about film and darkrooms.

    Customer Review: Love this camera!
This camera is awesome. It is great in low light and I can still ghost images which I prefer doing. I've gone to the dark side (digital) and I really enjoy it. This is my first DSLR.
    Customer Review: Performed as Expected
The first time I saw the Canon EOS 5D was back in 2005, shortly after it was released. To me, it represented the logical digital version of a full-frame 35mm SLR at a fraction of the cost of the top-of-the-line offerings from Canon and Nikon. I purchased the kit, which includes the EF 24-105mm zoom lens, for a trip to Japan, with the intent of using this as my primary walk around camera. It performed as expected: the 24mm wide angle was very useful, as was the 105mm. Resolution, color balance, etc. were very good to excellent. Indoor exposures with ISO 400 were excellent, and IS system worked well, since I did not bring a tripod. (I also brought the 100mm macro lens and 100-400mm zoom lens from Canon for the trip).

The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS-1D Mark III have some of the finest features, but the IDs Mark III is a 21.1 megapixel full frame SLR digital camera while the ID Mark III is a 10.1 megapixel SLR digital camera. The IDs shoots five frames per second while the ID shoots 12 frames per second. The comparison between the camera s for RAW images and full resolution pictures is 12 RAW and 56 full resolutions for the IDs and 30 RAW and 110 full resolutions for the ID. Both cameras have a three-inch LCD screen. The best camera between the two is the EOS-ID Mark III.

The Canon EOS 5D Digital, EOS 40D Digital and the EOS 30D Digital cameras have different features and prices. The EOS 5D shoots 60 full resolutions and 17 RAW, the 40D shoots 75 full resolutions and 17 RAW and the 30D shoots 30 full resolution pictures and 11 RAW. The 30D and the 5D have 2.5-inch LCD screens and the 40D has a 3-inch LCD screen. The megapixels for the 40D are 10.1 while the megapixels for the 30D are 8.2 and 12.8 megapixels for 5D. The best camera for megapixels and resolution is the Canon EOS 5D.

The Digital Rebel XTi and the Digital Rebel XT SLR cameras are comparable in price, but for the features and megapixels, they are very different. The XTi provides 10.1 megapixels while the XT has 8 megapixels. The XT does have a DIGIC II image processor but so does the XTi. The frame burst is different on each with the XT 14 and the XTi having 27. The best camera for the Canon Rebel is the Canon Rebel XTi.

Between all the Canon SLR cameras listed here, the best camera is the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III.

Of course, Canon is just one player in the field of digital SLR cameras. Nikon has some pretty nice models to look at, as do Pentax and Olympus. Name brand loyalty is important if you have a lot of accessories and lenses that only work with a specific brand. It's also something to consider, as your collection of camera stuff grows over the years.

Canon Digital Elph Camera Accessory Kit 2 - Model 8456A006 Batteries

  • Includes Li-Ion battery (NB-3L), soft leather case (PSC-55), and braided metallic lanyard neck strap
  • Deluxe leather case (PSC-55)
  • Li-Ion battery pack (NB-3L)
  • Braided metal neck strap
  • Compatible with the Powershot-SD100/SD110/SD500/SD550 digital cameras

Devastating its predecessor the Nikon D50 Digital SLR camera, the all new compact and affordable point-and-shoot Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera comes at a significantly lower price. With a subtly different set of features Nikon has trimmed some of the 'less important features and have included a range of new features including the custom Auto ISO feature available on the Nikon D80 Digital SLR cameras.

Nikon appears to have concentrated on what makes a good camera. A solid viewfinder,a short shutter lag, and an exceptionally short viewfinder blackout. On the negative side the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera does not have an internal focus drive motor and as a result no mechanical focus drive pin. Rather it has CPU contacts allowing Auto Focus only with AF-S and AF-I lenses which have built-in focus motors. This means the Nikon 'standard' lenses the Nikkor 50 mm F1.8D and the F1.4D will be manual focus only on the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera.

The difference in the lens mount of the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera and the Nikon D80 Digital SLR camera is the mechanical focus drive pin at about the 7 o'clock position on the mount of the Nikon D80 Digital SLR camera.

I personally purchased the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera and my family and I have been taking pictures non stop since purchasing it in January 2007. I highly recommend the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera for an entry level professional grade camera. I also would suggest purchasing a large memory chip I purchased a 4GB chip for under 100 dollars at Futureshop and it held over 1600 photos at the highest resolution the camera offers.

Hats off to Nikon, for delivering a solid, affordable digital camera with multitude of features and resisting the temptation to enter the chase for more mega pixels.

The day you decide that you need to buy a digital camera you will need to consider various facts. By doing this you will be ready to compare the various digital camera features and decide which digital camera you wish to buy. There are of course many features available when we talk about digital cameras so you will need to isolate what features interest you as a photographer before buying.

So you may start by asking what are the features you want are or need that will help you take great looking photographs. One important factor you might want to consider is the amount of pixel that is offered on the various type of digital cameras.

Of course if you want to compare digital camera features like this you might want to have a buyers guide that will list all the various features for each camera model. For example you will be able to compare the amount of pixels for each camera model you consider buying. Always keep in mind that the amount of pixels will usually determine what will be the quality of your pictures. The more pixels you have the greater the quality.

Another factor you should consider when you compare digital camera features is: What will you do with your camera. Is the camera you are looking at is for amateur photographer, semi-serious or serious photographers? Determining this will bring you one step further from buying the camera you need.

When you start to compare digital camera features you will soon be submerge by more info that you were actually looking for. They key is to look for the one you want instead of being overwhelmed by features you dont need. Some of those feature apart form the pixel amount could be your picture options. Do you want your pictures to turn into sepia, black and white or soft pictures with the use of your filter?

One point I strongly suggest you look into when you compare digital camera features is the shooting modes you get with your camera. You should find indications about various features like the focusing or flash capabilities of various digital cameras. Whether it is Canon, Nikon, Olympus or any other brand of digital camera, make sure you dont overlook this aspect.

Of course the information you will gather to help you compare digital camera features will mostly be of technical nature. Make sure you look at various sources of information. Another great place to look for information is to buy photography magazines. They will help you compare digital camera features that allow you to take picture with special effects.

These special effects could be special zoom capabilities that allow you to take pictures from a totally new angle or focus capabilities enabling you to crop some of the surrounding areas of you subject.

Of course if you want to take great picture (who doesnt want to) it helps to have many different helpful features in your camera. It is up to you trfin}ow want in your camera by gathering the right information and doing research in magazine, internet articles and digital camera buyers guide to help you compare digital camera features.

If you want to Compare Digital Camera Features visit my website for various reviews of different digital camera model.
